How You Can Use Your Talent Without Making Yourself the Center

God gave you your talent for a purpose, but your talent was never meant to become your identity. You may be gifted in music, preaching, teaching, writing, leadership, business, creativity, counselling, communication, technology, administration or another area, but the question is not simply whether you are talented. The greater question is what you are doing with what God has entrusted to you. Colossians 3:23–24 teaches you to work heartily as unto the Lord and not merely to impress people. Your talent becomes an offering when you use it with excellence, discipline and a heart that recognizes God as the source. Before you ask, “How can my talent make me successful?” ask yourself, “How can this talent help me serve God and bless people?”

Talent can easily become a platform for self-glory when you begin measuring your worth by applause, followers, recognition, money or people's approval. You may start serving only when people notice you, become frustrated when someone else receives recognition or refuse opportunities that do not put you in the spotlight. Matthew 5:16 says, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Notice that people may see your works, but the glory must ultimately point to the Father. Your talent can attract attention, but your character should direct that attention toward Jesus. If nobody applauded you, would you still use your gift faithfully?

You must also develop your talent instead of hiding behind the excuse that God gave it to you naturally. A gift is an opportunity, not a finished product. If you can sing, improve your voice. If you can teach, study. If you can write, sharpen your communication. If you can lead, develop your leadership capacity. If you can create, learn your craft. Excellence does not compete with spirituality; it can become an expression of stewardship. You honour God when you take seriously what He has placed in your hands. What talent have you received from God that you have allowed to remain undeveloped because you are waiting for someone else to discover you?

Your talent should also become a blessing to people around you. Do not use your gift merely to build your personal brand while ignoring the needs of the people God has placed around you. Teach someone what you know. Mentor someone who is coming behind you. Create opportunities for others. Celebrate the gifts of people who may eventually become better than you in certain areas. A mature person does not need to remain the only gifted person in the room. Your assignment is not threatened when another person succeeds. Can you genuinely celebrate someone else's talent without comparing yourself with them or feeling that their success diminishes yours?

Ultimately, your talent belongs under the Lordship of Jesus. Your gift can open doors, but only character and fellowship with the Holy Spirit can help you steward those doors well. Give God the credit, remain teachable, serve people faithfully and refuse to allow applause to become your source of identity. When people praise your talent, learn to direct your heart back to the One who gave it to you. Your greatest achievement is not that people know your name; it is that your life causes people to recognize the goodness of Jesus. What would happen to your talent, your influence and your future if you stopped asking, “How can this gift make me famous?” and started asking, “How can this gift make Christ visible through me?”

Hope Expression Values You
